Strategic Accounting with Iowa City Roots: Built for Builders, Backed by Experience

For James, the journey into accounting began not in a classroom, but in the real world—where he witnessed a family business nearly unravel due to preventable tax errors and financial mismanagement. That early exposure ignited a lifelong mission: to protect entrepreneurs from financial chaos and help them thrive with clarity, structure, and strategy.

That mission took formal shape in Iowa City, where James was admitted into the University of Iowa Honors Program and quickly distinguished himself in the Tippie College of Business. An early honours course in financial accounting—taught by the MAc Program Director—crystallised his path forward. What set James apart wasn’t just technical ability; it was conviction. While others pursued accounting for job security, James pursued it to serve.

The Bedell Lab & Launch Services: Where the Mission Began

James’s first professional opportunity came through the Bedell Entrepreneurship Learning Laboratory (BELL). There, a group of student founders at Launch Services needed someone who could master QuickBooks, improve accounting systems, and guide real businesses through their financial setups. After a rigorous QBO test administered by BELL advisors, James earned the role of Chief Technology Officer & Accounting Consultant.

He helped launch and support local businesses in Iowa City and the surrounding corridor—from coffee shops and chiropractors to solar firms and fro-yo startups. Some used his projections to qualify for small business loans; others simply needed someone who could bring order to the chaos. For James, it was clear: this is what he was meant to do.

In 2014, he quietly registered the domain corridor-consulting.com, planting the seed for what would eventually become his firm.

From Iowa City to Enterprise-Level Finance

To deepen his understanding of complex financial systems, James joined Mercy Physician Services, gaining oversight of GAAP reporting, capital budgets, and month-end closings for dozens of clinics. He implemented system transitions, improved fixed asset workflows, and completed a Green Belt-certified Lean Six Sigma project that saved the organisation over $150K per year.

This enterprise experience gave him an insider’s view of financial operations at scale—and a deep respect for the systems that keep organisations running smoothly.

Advanced Tax & Strategic Planning

James later joined a regional CPA firm, working under a 42-year tax veteran with deep experience in estate planning and fiduciary tax law. His responsibilities included:

  • High-Level Tax Strategy – Planning across entities, trusts, and partnerships with §754 elections, DRO analysis, and depreciation strategy.

  • Multi-State Compliance & IRS Representation – Responding to notices and audits with precision and professionalism.

  • Onboarding & Advisory – Reviewing past filings, cleaning up books, and aligning clients for future growth.

  • Mentorship & Process Design – Training staff and leading internal updates during TCJA implementation.

His technical fluency and passion for client education made him a trusted advisor to business owners across multiple industries.
